The indie artist who flew in from Nashville, TN explains what life is like for a musician after working for years in business.
Tim is a solo artist - guitarist, pianist, and bassist. He calls his music Americana alternative because it is a mix of the two. He writes his own songs and does his own production.
Tim says he is a 2nd career musician. He worked first for some businesses and as an entrepreneur. Now he has passive income to support himself while he pursues music. He has always dabbled in playing and songwriting, but just started getting serious in 2015. His business background is important since many of the musicians today have very little.
Tim admits it's interesting. He's originally from South Dakota. Nashville was his first experience in the South - culturally different. "The Nashville Vibes" he calls them - old school. For example, he is insipired by Lil Nas X. To go from living on his sister's couch to living for weeks at #1 on the Billboard is a huge deal. But people in Nashville would comment that he did not "pay his dues." This paradigm of thinking is not modern when many of the top artists today are in their twenties.
Tim thinks Tik-tok for sure. It's just another one to master... That's what Lil Nas X used. That and memes!
Tim used Distrokid, but didn't do in-depth research on it. He had a previous artist name, and is now trying to rebuild his brand. He only has one song on streaming, but is ready to start launching a song each month.
You bet! His main criteria when moving was a studio room. 13 feet ceilings, 30 feet long, 20 feet wide. It's his haven, man-cave. He spends a lot of his time learning production. He even works with a Grammy winning producer. The producer is good, but when he does it himself, it sounds more organic. Sometimes it's better to do things yourself to stay away from ego issues.
